Pope Francis enjoys a very public friendship with Rabbi Abraham Skorka, his close friend from the time he served as Bishop of Argentina. Indeed, the two collaborated on a book, On Heaven and Earth: On Faith, Family, and the Church in the 21st Century. First published in 2010, the book has become a bestseller since Bergoglio’s ascension to the papacy. Rabbi Skorka has been the Pope’s guest at his personal residence in Rome, and he accompanied Francis on his trip to Israel. Their frequent public appearances together and the obvious joy and friendship they share helps to place a human face on Catholic-Jewish understanding in the twenty-first century.
